Blowdown    MacMillan Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada

Cathedral grove has gone through some significant changes over the last few years. The biggest change was the result of a severe windstorm in 1997 that blew down hundreds of very large trees, including the Douglas Fir in this image. Some of the trees where estimated to be over 800 years old. However death is a part of life and  the open canopy will add much needed light to new growth. The decaying trees will also act as nurse logs to new saplings.
