Charred Forest    Kootenay National Park, British Columbia, Canada

Kootenay National Park has had many forest fires over the years. Remnants from the last major fire is quite evident throughout the park. Fire is not only a natural occurrence but a necessity to keep the forest ecosystem healthy. Take a short walk into any of the burnt areas within the park and it is quickly apparent how much new life has benefited from the burn. I took this image on a rather gloomy day at the head of the Floe Lake trail head. I find the burnt trees very graphic, the lines of bare conifers seemed to extend as far as the eye could see.
